Subject: 10 GHz EME question
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
The Toronto VHF Society (VE3ONT) is beginning to make
plans for EME operations using the 46 m (150') dish at
Algonquin Park later this year.
We have been discussing the possibility of trying EME on
10 GHz. The dish is figured to at least 12 GHz, and is
adequately steerable. The question is this: is there any
point to using such a big dish at 10 GHz for EME? One
argument says "yes, the gain will be humungous." Another
argument says "no, the high gain of the dish will under-
illuminate the Moon so there is no *real* monster gain."
I subscribe to the latter point of view. It seems to me that
an antenna beamwidth of < the Moon's diameter doesn't benefit
the overall link budget. By this argument, 10GHz EME is
optimum with a dish about 4m in diameter (beamwidth about 0.5
degrees, the apparent width of the Moon). The 46 m dish will be
no better than a 4 m dish.
So... am I correct?

Well, you'll need a reciprocal permit - I'd suggest you ask the ARRL for their
RECIPOP package for the UK, and count on the process taking a number of weeks.
As for frequencies, the 2M band here is 144-146MHz, with the bulk of the FM
activity in the upper MHz. Repeaters are all 600KHz split, with the outputs
high. Channel spacing is 25KHz. If you need anything more specific, let me
know.

WIA Extraordinary general meeting result
----------------------------------------
The result of the vote of no-confidence in the Council of the
NSW Division Of the W.I.A. was presented in a halting manner
on last week's WIA broadcast and , as a result, could have
been misheard. For those who did not hear it clearly, here is
the result of the vote:
In favour of the no-confidence vote 198
against 72
invalid votes 4
abstaining 2
I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

Results of QSLing.
Yes, it does get results when one sends a QSL card
direct with a suitable green stamp enclosed.
Today, 10th March 1994, VK2BQS opened his mail box to
find a card from USA, not unusual we agree... The card was
from a well known QSL Manager and was posted 24th Feb 1994.
Still not unusual.
It was for a QSO with ANGUILLA, now that is unusual as
BQS did not recall the contact and felt sure it was a new
country.
Wait, it shows a 2XSSB contact and it seems a long
time since anything other than RTTY has been QSLed. But it
does say TNX for QSL.
Oh boy, the date of QSO ... 11-1-79...Fifteen years?????
Dig out the log book (number one) and woe, nothing
under 11th January 1979, thinks???? (like greenbottle). Dig
again, for log book number two, and there on 1st Nov 1979 is
VP2EY and lo and behold, the QSL went direct with a green
stamp or equivalent, and this is the first reply.
And a check of other records shows that was the only
time VP2E was worked in 17 years.
AINT PATIENCE WUNNERFUL..

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I have recently ordered the new Heil Pro-set 4 headset to go with
my FT-1000D. Unfortunately, since I am still in temporary digs, I have
no antenna and no way to use the rig - yet. However, I have heard
that there may be some difficulties in getting enough audio drive
out of the FT1000 to the Pro-set headset. Does anyone have first-hand
experience with this? Is there really a potential problem?

Kevin (and anyone else who might be interested): There is a newsgroup/
email reflector called `boatanchors' that is dedicated to amateur
tube gear. To subscribe send an email to boatanchors-request@gnu.ai.mit.edu
and ask to be placed on the list. You'll get from 20 to 30 articles
via email daily. To post an article just use the above address WITHOUT
the `-request' portion.
Lots of VERY knowledgable and friendly folks on there.

I don't know how good or bad the 830's noise blanker is, but a general
answer to your question "isn't that the kind of noise..." is that
blankers work best on the noise that's the most dissimilar to a
signal. High amplitude, short duration noise, aka impulse noise, is
the easiest for circuitry to distinguish and eliminate. On the other
hand, any noise that's in the audio band and is roughly the same
amplitude as the desired signal is impossible for normal circuitry to
remove. I know DSP can help here, but I don't know enough about it to
say how effective it is.

My club has been kicking this around for way too long now.
We have looked at several PC-based repeater controllers,
but they are either way the hell too expensive for
what they do or they do only what they do with no
room for innovation or expansion.
Both issues gave us pause. I wouldn't mind developing
a neat driver that would allow you to write your
own repeater controller in a script language, but
that sounds too much like work if there was no $$$ market
for it. Similar sentiments have been expressed to me
by an associate who wrote a microcontroller repeater
controller.
So, is a whiz-bang system meeting my wish list
above now available in the ham market?

Hey, who ya talkin' about, Bob? AH6FU is a Hawaii call, and there's only
one Hawaii ham who posts on here.... (oh my God - is he referring to me?)
I guess Hawaii hams will be vying for 2x0 callsigns since we have to
have the mandatory `H6' in the prefix. Not much of a choice:
AH6, KH6, NH6, WH6. Phooey. [Hey, now there's a neat call: PH0OEY.]
